A PLAYLIST FOR...A SUMMER ANTHEM

I don't know about you. But when its summertime and I'm driving in an outrageously hot car, sun beating down, and the AC is struggling to keep me alive, all I really need is a good song to make everything okay. I'm telling you a summer anthem = feel good survival. For me, last summer that song was definitely Mirrors by the dapper JT. Heck his whole album made me swoon.

At the end of this past semester I couldn't wait to get home to cruise around town and throw on some jams, as cheesy as that sounds. So naturally, I did what I always do. I made a playlist.

You can listen along here on Spotify. And who knows? Maybe you'll find yourself dancing and singing uncontrollably at a stoplight too.

READING DAY | WHAT I WORE

Ever have one of those days when you dress up even though you're going to be at home most of the day? Yep. That was when I wore this outfit. I didn't have much on my list of things to do besides just relax and cozy up with a book. And for some reason that's beyond me, I opted to wear something other than pajamas.

Currently I am reading The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer. I'm not very far into it yet but so far so good. Its about a group of friends who have known each other since teenagers after going to summer camp together. It was more of a spur of the moment purchase for something to read on my flight home. But when I think about it most of my bookstore buys are spur of the moment and never really get the reading love they deserve. Cross your fingers that I actually finish this one.

WHAT I WORE:
Top: thrifted
Shorts: (that's right those babies are shorts. One of the DIY projects I took on last summer.) thrifted
Sandals: Payless

PAINTING TO PASS THE TIME

Yesterday I spontaneously decided to spruce up my room. This mostly consisted of me pushing my cumbersome furniture in circles until I broke a sweat and finally found a new place for each piece to go. Don't ask me why but I ended up with my desk in the closet. (Maybe that's a story for another post.) After rearranging everything I ended up going through some of my stuff and discovering a bunch of crafting and art supplies. I went through a lot of phases when I was younger. First it was scapbooking, then beading, then knitting, then sewing. When I wasn't doing homework, I would be invested in some new project.

I ended up playing around with a watercolor set that I remember buying in high school for a drawing class I was taking at the time. Painting for a drawing assignment? Go figure. Anyways, the above pictures are the result of my boredom. I overlayed them on some pictures I took at the beach a while back. So yep. Now they are that much fancier.

READ. LOOK. LISTEN. WATCH. | 01

I love the link packs that other bloggers post (some favorites include the ones from SwissMiss or Nubbly Twiglet) so I figured why not put my own twist on this kind of feature. Every week I'll post four finds from around the web that you can either read, look, listen, or watch. Short and sweet. Easy as pie. So without further ado...

READ / I finally know what to do this summer.
LOOK / This makes me want to spend more time outdoors.
LISTEN / An old cover, but still so good.
WATCH / The guy behind Field Notes is straight up awesome.

BIRTHDAY DINNER | WHAT I WORE

Sometimes I swear that I was never meant to be a Florida girl. Despite all the heat and humidity, I insist on wearing layers or long sleeves. Also, I still have a good three months before heading back to school (aka the frozen tundra) and I keep finding myself looking at the leftover sweaters and jackets in stores rather than perusing through the tank tops and sun dresses. Clearly I can't accept that its actually 90 degrees outside.

I wore this outfit the other night to a birthday dinner for a friend from high school. Ideally, I would have worn the jacket over the pink crop top but it was just too hot out to even consider that option. The baby turtleneck would just have to stick it out alone.

WHAT I WORE:
Top: Forever 21
Skirt: h&m
Denim Jacket: Forever 21
Shoes: Payless
Sunglasses: Vintage
Makeup: Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick, Urban Decay Naked2 palette

GETTING IN THE MOOD | BLOG DESIGN

As I get the ball rolling with this blog, I am attempting to revamp its overall design. A long way back I did a little tweaking but now I am ready to overhaul. I began collecting a lot of images from an array of sources, including Pinterest, Tumblr and Designspiration, and this is what I came up with for a mood board. Hopefully it was act as a visual guide of sorts before I get to work.

Overall, its funny looking at all of the accounts I've used around the net to collect images up until this point. Everything I've pinned or reblogged has a similar tone to it. Usually it either has a) strictly black and white or b) pops of color. Hues like teal and coral are super common too. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised though. I've been told more than once that peachy corals are my thing and when you look in my closet, the ratio of black/white to color is probably 5 to 1.

The color scheme above is my starting point. Although I might change things up as I move along. Stay tuned for more!

LETTERS TO MAD MEN

Tomorrow night is the finale for the spring season of Mad Men. What they have shown so far has been spectacular and in the last episode there were some great scenes with Don and Peggy. I can't really say I have any predictions for this last installment, considering the previews for new episodes never give you a clue as to what will happen next! Does anyone else feel this way? I just hope we get some more Kiernan Shipka. I honesty have to say that I despised her character in the early seasons. But it wasn't until recently that I began to admire her sass. Plus her attitude towards Betty is gold.

Anyway, I'm sorry if you aren't a fan of Mad Men. Mostly because its a freaking great show, and you should go watch it if you haven't! But also because I just yammered on about it for far too long and this hand lettering type experiment thing is a quote from Don Draper, the main character played by the lovely Jon Hamm.

Now this happens to be my first go at the lettering game. I've seen a lot of hand drawn type lately so I thought I would give it a try. It was actually pretty fun. (very tedious, AH! I was freaking out when I tried to trace and ink my sketch properly.) I will definitely try it again to improve some things that were a bit challenging, like the scripts and the S.

(Also please enjoy this little dose of Jon Hamm. Couldn't help myself.)

DOG DAYS ARE OVER

As of late, everything has been late. It's usually how every summer break starts. I'm sleeping in late in the afternoon, watching TV late at night and being lazy...well all day long. But as the weeks pass by I'm being reminded more and more that I need to get a job, I need money for the next semester and I especially need to start saving for study abroad. Sigh. Being a college student is amazing and a struggle at the same time. Here's to an adventurous summer with the good ole 9 to 5 or with whoever else will have me!

  1. Meet Ali'i. Sometimes he can be so presh. But unfortunately that's usually only when he's asleep.
  2. I got this calendar for free at the local asian supermarket. I just like it for the fruit. I guess I realized this since it was still on the March-April months until very recently. Oops.
  3. CAUTION: I can take selfies now. I had the tiniest old school slider phone for the longest time. We finally upgraded last week. I'm a happy camper.
  4. Decided to take up running. (Seriously questioning this choice.) I thought this boardwalk would be a peaceful place to jog until I found out that mosquitoes love the scenery as well.
